Note: This is the 2-player version of Tokyo Highway.
Welcome to Tokyo Highway, where strategy meets creativity! Players engage in a thrilling race to place all of their cars onto the highway—but first, they must construct the very road on which they’ll drive!
Throughout the game, players utilize 66 squat cylinders to build towering columns, connecting them with roadsticks to create a dynamic and opportunistic highway. The columns don't need to match heights, allowing for strategic elevation changes that can either aid or challenge vehicle placement. Secure a well-placed highway section, and you can score points by adding cars to your masterpiece!
Game Objective:
Your mission is to build a highway and successfully place all your cars while crossing your opponent’s roads. The first player to position all 10 cars on the highway is crowned the winner!
How to Play:
During each turn, you’ll perform three key actions:
1. Construct a Pillar: Choose a location to build your pillar. You’re free to select any construction point that is reachable from a base point established in a prior turn. The height of your new pillar must be one unit taller or shorter than the base pillar. Remember, you can’t build at the same height or two levels above/below the reference point, with some exceptions when constructing a junction.
2. Construct a Road: Your new road must connect the base point and the newly constructed pillar. Feel free to adjust the pillar's position as you lay down the road, but be cautious—roads cannot cross over previously placed pillars!
3. Place Cars on the Highway: If conditions are met, you can place a car on your new road section (refer to the conditions for car placement). Your turn concludes with your opponent acting as the judge. If any issues arise, they must be resolved immediately!
The game continues as players alternate performing these steps. However, keep in mind that once your opponent builds a new pillar, you can no longer adjust your previously constructed pillars, roads, or cars.
Conditions for Car Placement:
You can only place a car on your newest road if it successfully crosses over or under your opponent’s road. Here’s how:
If you meet these criteria, you can place a car on the highway. If not, the road can still be connected to the next pillar, but no cars can be placed.
For each road crossed, you can place additional cars accordingly!
Caution:
- You cannot place a car while crossing over or under your own road.
- Cars cannot be placed on previously constructed roads in later stages of the game.
Stay within the traffic rules and enjoy your highway adventure!
Constructing a Junction:
The yellow pillar represents a junction. This special structure allows you to:
1. Adjust Heights: Change the height of your pillar by any number, provided at least one gray pillar is below the junction. Just remember, the usual rules for height apply in the next turn.
2. Branching Out: Feel free to divert your highway from the junction at any time during the game.
Creating an Exit to the Highway:
Successfully ground a road from a height of one pillar to the table to establish an exit. Doing so rewards you with an additional car placed on the exit road! If this exit crosses your opponent’s road(s), you can place even more cars. However, starting a new road from the exit is not allowed.
Penalty:
If you accidentally drop your opponent’s car or road during construction, you’ll be penalized by having to hand over that number of pillars to them. The game can only proceed once the dropped components are fixed by the responsible player. No penalties exist for dropping your own components.
End of the Game:
1. The game concludes when a player successfully places all 10 cars on the highway; they are the winner!
2. If you exhaust your construction materials before placing all your cars, you must wait for your opponent to finish their next turn. If your opponent wraps up without a penalty, the player without materials loses.
Gather your strategic wits, build your highway, and embark on an exciting journey in Tokyo Highway!
