Turmoil is the thrilling fifth expansion of Terraforming Mars, transporting players back to the red planet for an intense struggle over control and progress in the ever-evolving human society. Get ready for an experience filled with political intrigue and strategic depth!

With new corporations, exciting projects, and a fresh type of cards known as Global Events, players will face challenges ranging from dust storms and riots to surges in alloy demand. These events will demand foresight as you plan your strategies up to three generations in advance.

At the heart of Turmoil lies the political arena of the Terraforming Committee. Engage in a new action that allows you to add delegates to various parties, with the first delegate each generation free of charge, and additional ones costing 5 MC. The introduction of neutral delegates, influenced by global events, reflects the shifting desires and trends of society!

Gaining prominence in the political landscape can shift the balance of power. When a player—neutral or otherwise—has more delegates in a party than anyone else, they claim the party leader seat. Furthermore, if one party dominates through a majority of delegates, it will assume ruling status in the next generation, imposing its one-time bonus and ongoing policy, while bestowing the chairmanship to its leader and increasing their terraform rating by 1.

Here’s a glimpse into the dynamic parties you can choose from:

  • Kelvinist: Bonus of 1 MC/heat production; Policy: 10 MC -> +1 heat production and +1 energy production
  • Scientist: Bonus of 1 MC/science tag; Policy: 10 MC -> draw 3 cards (once per player)
  • Unity: Bonus of 1 MC/planet tag; Policy: Titanium is worth +1 MC
  • Mars First: Bonus of 1 MC/building tag; Policy: Placing a tile on Mars gives 1 steel
  • Greens: Bonus of 1 MC/biological tag; Policy: Placing a greenery tile gives 4 MC
  • Reds: Bonus of 1 TR for the lowest player; Policy: Increasing TR in the action phase costs +3 MC

The political landscape also affects players’ influence, empowering them to either moderate or enhance the impact of the current global event. Influence can be earned by being the chairman, the leader of the dominant party, or possessing a non-leader delegate within it.

To fund all exciting new bonuses, the Terraform Committee revises the terraform rating, which lowers each player’s rating by one step every generation.
