Turmoil, the fifth expansion for the beloved game Terraforming Mars, plunges players back into the challenging world of Mars—a planet where control and societal progress are both competitive and precarious.

In this expansion, prepare to encounter new corporations and exciting projects, along with a thrilling addition of Global Events cards. Experience everything from dust storms and riots to an explosive demand for alloys, each event providing an opportunity to strategize for generations ahead.

At the core of Turmoil lies the political landscape of the Terraforming Committee. With a brand-new action, you can place delegates into various political parties: the first delegate each generation is free, while each additional one will cost 5 MegaCredits (MC). The incoming global events will introduce neutral delegates, reflecting the evolving desires and trends of Martian society.

When a player (even a neutral one) accumulates more delegates in a party than their opponents, they seize control of that party's leadership. Likewise, when a party garners more delegates than any other, it becomes the dominant force. This dominant party will wield power in the subsequent generation, implementing one-time bonuses, ongoing policies, and granting the party leader a chairmanship that rewards them with a +1 terraform rating.

Party Dynamics:

  • Kelvinist: Gain 1 MC/heat production. Policy: 10 MC → +1 heat and +1 energy production.
  • Scientist: Gain 1 MC per science tag. Policy: 10 MC → Draw 3 cards (once per player).
  • Unity: Gain 1 MC per planet tag. Policy: Titanium is valued at +1 MC.
  • Mars First: Gain 1 MC per building tag. Policy: Placing a tile on Mars earns +1 steel.
  • Greens: Gain 1 MC per biological tag. Policy: Placing a greenery tile nets you 4 MC.
  • Reds: Gain 1 terraform rating for the lowest player. Policy: Increasing TR during the action phase costs +3 MC.

The political arena significantly influences players' actions, allowing them to either moderate or amplify the repercussions of current global events. Influence is accumulated through chairmanship of the Committee, leadership of the dominant party, and maintaining non-leader delegates in that party.

In a twist, to fund these new intricate bonuses, the Committee will revise the terraform rating, reducing it for all players by one step each generation.

With Turmoil, players can endeavor to push their own agendas aggressively or select a more conservative, economic approach. Craft strategies to mitigate global events using your influence or reposition your gameplay to best capitalize on the unfolding challenges. Stay one step ahead of your rivals as you anticipate their moves and counter their plans.
