Pax Porfiriana – Latin for "The Porfirian Peace" – transports you to the dramatic 33-year reign of the notorious dictator, Porfirio Díaz, who ruled Mexico with an iron fist until the 1910 Revolution shattered his rule.
In this immersive game, you step into the shoes of a powerful businessman (Hacendado) navigating the turbulent pre-revolutionary borderlands of the U.S. and Mexico. Your mission? Compete to build a thriving business empire, filled with ranches, mines, railroads, troops, and banks, all while cleverly undermining your opponents with bandidos, Native Americans, and strategic lawsuits.
The gameplay unfolds over several dynamic phases:
1. Action Phase: Execute three strategic actions, which could include playing new cards, acquiring additional cards from the market, speculating on upcoming cards, purchasing land, or redeploying troops.
2. Discard Headlines: Remove any Headline cards (marked with the Bull-Bear icon) that have reached the leftmost position in the Market, keeping the game fresh and unpredictable.
3. Restore Market: Refill the Market to a total of twelve cards, ensuring plenty of options for your next moves.
4. Income Phase: Collect one gold for each Income, Extortion, and Connection Cube you have in play. Beware of the Depression – it forces you to pay one gold for every card in play, including Partners, Enterprises in your Row, and all Troops!
With four "scoring" cards (Toppling) in play, their effects vary depending on the current form of government. As troops are played and cards are activated, the government can change, influencing everything from mine production to your overall strategy.
Victory hinges on toppling Díaz – do so through a coup, succession, revolution, or even via the annexation of Mexico by the U.S. However, if Díaz holds firm until the end of the game, the player with the most gold claims victory!
The Ultimate Edition introduces an exciting new Era II card set, propelling the gameplay into the aftermath of the original events. Dive into the rich tapestry of history, strategy, and competition that Pax Porfiriana has to offer!
