Embark on thrilling expeditions with Lost Cities: Roll & Write, where your mission is to traverse six colorful paths with the smallest numbers on your dice!
Each turn, you'll face an exciting choice: continue on your current expedition or blaze a trail for a new one. With opportunities to accelerate your journey through special acceleration fields and artifacts, every roll presents a strategic decision that could lead you to victory. But beware! If your expedition stalls, the points you earned can vanish as quickly as they appeared!
Here's how it works:
Every player gets a personalized score sheet featuring eight columns. These include six vibrant columns corresponding to the colors of Lost Cities (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple), plus an artifact column and a dice column. You'll fill in these columns from the bottom up, building your scores step by step.
As the active player, you’ll roll six dice: three color dice and three number dice ranging from 0 to 9. From this roll, select one number die and one color die to fill in on your score sheet. If you select a 0 and haven’t started that color, you can score extra by marking the "double point" circle at the base of the column. Choose a non-zero number, and if you haven't started that column yet, place it in the bottommost space. If you’ve already begun, you can only add a number that is equal to or higher than your previous entry—remember, a 0 counts as 10 in this game!
Meanwhile, other players will choose their own number and color dice from the remaining pool, advancing their own pathways.
Strategic players can capitalize on arrows in their columns to "accelerate." This means filling the next available space at the bottom of a color column with the same number at its top. Keep an eye out for opportunities to score multiple accelerations by stacking numbers atop arrows!
When filling an artifact box, mark off a space in the artifact column. If you've successfully filled all nine boxes, any further actions allow you to score artifacts instead. Feel free to pass on the number-color combination if it doesn’t fit your strategy, marking off a die in the dice column instead.
Be the first to mark the seventh space in a color column or the seventh space in the artifact or dice column to earn a coveted 20-point "bridge bonus" for crossing that milestone before everyone else!
Once you finish marking the ninth space in the dice column, you're "exhausted," but the game is not over yet. Players continue until everyone has reached this point or all eight bridges have been crossed. After the final round, it’s time to tally up your scores!
Points are awarded based on how many spaces you've filled in each color column, and any strategies that led you to mark the "double point" circle will double your score, whether that’s a positive or negative outcome. Don’t forget to add points from your artifact and dice columns too, but keep in mind if you're exhausted, you score 0 for that category.
Finally, combine your bridge bonus with points from the color, artifact, and dice columns. The player with the highest total will emerge victorious!
