At the heart of this exhilarating challenge are two rival spymasters who hold the keys to the identities of 25 secret agents. Their teammates, however, only know these agents by their quirky codenames—think “disease,” “Germany,” and yes, even “carrot.” Each name is a gateway into a secret world, and it’s up to the spymasters to guide their teams without giving too much away.

In Codenames, teams race against one another to identify all their agents before the other side. The game begins with 25 cards laid out, each emblazoned with a single word. The spymasters glance at a separate card that reveals the true identities behind these codenames. Then, they take turns providing clues, which consist of a single word paired with a number—indicating how many cards correlating to the clue are on the table.

Teammates put their heads together to guess the agents they believe belong to their team. If they get it right, they can keep guessing, with the potential to reveal up to one more than the number given! But tread carefully—guess wrong, and the turn ends. And if they select the assassin? It’s game over!

The tension escalates as spymasters continue to deliver clues until one team successfully uncovers all of their agents, or the dreaded assassin plunges a dagger into their chances of victory.
