Arkwright is a deep economic strategy game that includes an all-new updated rulebook, revised components, and mini-expansions, delivering the complete game experience out of the box. Players compete to own the most valuable block of shares at the end of the game, and a challenging solo mode is also included for those who prefer to run their own industrial empire.
Step back in time to the late 18th century, where players take control of up to four bustling factories in England. Your objective is to dominate the market by increasing the value of your shares and strategically purchasing shares from the bank—because victory is determined not by sheer wealth, but by who controls the most valuable share block.
Success begins with assembling the right workforce. Hiring workers automatically creates demand for their labor, but why pay high wages (ranging from 2–5) when upgrading to efficient machines costs only 1? You must carefully balance expanding your workforce with advancing your factories to higher technical levels to improve productivity.
During each action round, you set the prices for your goods. Boost your sales potential by upgrading factories, improving product quality, and launching smart sales promotions. Higher-quality goods increase your chances of success—but pricing too aggressively can reduce demand.
Each player has a unique set of action tokens representing strategic options such as building and modernizing factories, hiring workers, or improving quality. On your turn, you place one token onto your Administration board and pay the corresponding administration cost (from 2 to 10, even numbers only). The more you invest, the more powerful your action becomes, allowing you to purchase multiple machines or increase quality levels in a single turn.
After every action round, one factory type becomes active. You must pay wages and machinery costs before selling your produced goods. As products leave the market, your share value increases—especially when selling top-quality items. You can also expand beyond domestic markets by shipping goods to the colonies, provided you secure a contract with the East India Company monopoly.
Once four production rounds are completed, players remove their action tokens and reveal an event token. The game ends after five rounds, and the winner is the player with the most valuable block of shares—not necessarily the most shares or the highest individual share value.
Arkwright offers multiple strategic paths to victory. You may run all factories at full capacity, focus on just two highly efficient operations, specialize in colonial shipping, or concentrate on the domestic market. Adapt to your opponents by exploiting supply shortages, exiting overcrowded markets, buying shares when prices fall, or delaying investments until profits peak.
New players can start with the 120-minute “Spinning Jenny” version, while experienced strategists can explore the full 240-minute “Waterframe” ruleset, which introduces more advanced factory upgrades and shipping options. In Arkwright, every decision shapes the future of your industrial empire.
